Grade Six Anti-Vaping Poster Contest

About The Contest

To help combat high levels of vaping in youth, the Interlake- Eastern Regional Health Authority is launching an ‘Anti-vaping’ poster contest with the focus being on the health risks of vaping and reasons not to vape.

Why It’s Important

Data from a recent Health Canada survey showed that 23% of students in grades 7-12 have tried an electronic cigarette. The use of e-cigarettes is not safe for kids, teens or young adults. E-cigarettes usually contain nicotine which is highly addictive to the developing brain. Nicotine can damage the developing brain in adolescents and young adults. In addition, vaping has been linked with lung damage.

Timelines

The contest launches February 1, 2022.

Closing date for students to submit their artwork to their teacher for in-house competition will be determined by each school. The closing date for schools to submit their in-house winners to the Interlake Eastern Regional Health Authority committee for regional selection is March 11, 2022 at 4:00pm.

Regional contest winners will be notified by March 15, 2022.

How It Works

1. We will provide schools with contest rules, timelines and submission criteria, so each school can run its own contest. Students may make a poster on their own or as part of a group.

2. Schools are to choose in-house judges to select their regional submission.

3. Each school can submit one poster to the Interlake Eastern Regional Health Authority committee for final regional judging.

4. Each regional entry must be accompanied by completing the Entry form.

The Interlake Eastern Regional Health Authority committee will select twelve regional winning entries.

Contest Eligibility

The contest will be open to all students attending grade 6 (or grade 5/6 split classes) in the Interlake-Eastern Region.

Homeschooled children in grade 6 are eligible to enter the contest. They will be eligible to win the $100 prize if they are selected as a winning regional entry. Homeschools will not be eligible for the classroom or school prizes.

Prizes

The Interlake Eastern Regional Health Authority Tobacco, Vaping and Cannabis Committee will select 12 winning regional entries.

The students with the winning regional submissions will receive $100 in prizes. Please note: a winning group submission will receive $100 in prizes to be split equally among its members. Winning regional submissions will also be posted on the IERHA website.

The classrooms with the winning regional submissions will receive $200 in prizes for participating.

Each participating school will be entered into a draw for a chance to win $1400 in prizes for the school.

On receipt of prizes, winning regional entries will become property of the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority. Non-winning submissions will be returned, if possible.

The Interlake Eastern Regional Health Authority will distribute cash prizes to the winning schools. Schools & teachers will be responsible for discussing/selecting with the students appropriate prizes from the list below and for purchasing the prizes to be distributed.
